Audio

There are basically two types of audio systems that most people are looking for. Home theaters and distributed audio. A home theater is usually a dedicated room meant for enjoying movies in all of their surround sound glory. There are many possible configurations for a theater.

5.1 Surround Sound

This is your most typical surround sound setup. There are three speakers across the front of the room. A left channel, a right channel, and a center channel. Then there are two surround speakers behind the seating area. Finally there is one subwoofer.

6.1 Surround Sound

This type of setup is actually fairly rare. There are three speakers across the front of the room. A left channel, a right channel, and a center channel. Then there are three surround speakers located behind the seating area. A left, a right, and a center. Finally there is one subwoofer.

7.1 Surround Sound

This particular setup is becoming more popular as people create dedicated rooms for theaters. This setup tends to work best in a rectangular, symmetrical room. There are three speakers across the front of the room. A left channel, a right channel, and a center channel. Then there are four surround speakers. Two are positioned to the sides of the seating area, and two behind the seating area. Finally there is one subwoofer.

Any of these configurations can be modified for a particular application and/or space; these are just typical layout suggestions. Additionally, by adding a second subwoofer to any of the setups listed above, you would simply replace the .1 with a .2.

Distributed audio is simply placing speakers somewhere not in close proximity to the amplifiers that run them. For example: we often put a pair of speakers (usually in-ceiling speakers) in several different rooms of the house. These speakers are all wired back to a central point. A basement, closet, etc.. This allows a homeowner to play music throughout the home without having individual sound systems in every room. This also allows for the rooms to share sources. One iPod dock or CD player could play in every room of the home.
