There is a lot to be said for “Going Green”.

In our industry is more than just a political statement. It is more of a challenge to try to identify ways that our products and skills can have a positive impact on the world around us.

Daylight Harvesting. This is a term for using the light from the sun to help supplement the artificial lighting in a home. With the use of appropriately placed sensors to detect the lighting level in a room or area, a control system can use that information to determine how much artificial light is needed in order to maintain a predetermined light level. If it is cloudy outside, the lights may need to be on at 70 percent. If it is a sunny day, the lights may not need to be on at all. Yet the entire time, the room or space stays at a constant level of light. This can yield dramatic savings in energy usage if properly implemented.

Another way to reduce energy consumption is by using the energy from the sun to help supplement the energy needed to heat and cool a home. By opening curtains and blinds when the sun is up, the sun’s rays help to warm the home. On the other hand, by closing curtains and blinds, the home is kept cooler by blocking those rays. Of course this can be done manually, assuming that someone is constantly available to open and close blinds. Motorized blinds along with a control system and a thermostat can do this small task automatically.
