Home theaters are no longer only an extravagance for the rich and famous. Thanks to more affordable technology, many families are enjoying a true movie theater experience without leaving home. You cannot have a dedicated room for your home theater without thinking about how you will be finishing the walls, ceiling and flooring within the room...

Home Theater Flooring

Carpeted floors help control home theater sound. Carpeted floors are generally considered to be the best option. They absorb sound and prevent excess reverberation around the room. You can either choose wall-to-wall carpeting or carpet tiles to help clarify the sound from your speakers as it travels throughout the room. Carpet is essential for the space between the front speakers and the listener to absorb the first sound reflections.

Home Theater Ceiling

The color and design of a home theater ceiling tile can play a major role. The ceiling should be painted using a dark color, preferably black, to help reduce any light reflections from your big screen. It is also widely accepted that the mood that is created by the decor in a home theater can change how you experience the movie. The hard surface of of your ceiling will help transfer the surround sound across your home theater room. Almost every single home theater room should include overhead lighting. This is by far the best and easiest way to completely light a room. These will need to be fully lit in order for everyone to get situated, clean the room, etc. The lighting needs to have dimmers to accommodate watching the movie.

Home Theater Walls

If you're tempted to staple inverted egg cartons all over your walls to muffle sound, relax. Regular drywall is a decent surface appropriate for home theater walls. However, break up large flat surfaces with furniture or drapes. Don't add framed art with glass — it's too reflective of sound and Concrete or concrete block is simply a no-no. If you're setting up in a basement with concrete walls, consider installing studs and drywall. Other options include acoustic wall panels designed specifically for home theaters. These panels are called "sound absorption" panels, and they help modulate low and high frequencies, preventing echoes. So,all floor areas should be carpeted and the ceiling should be 100% hard surface and the wall surface should be 50% soft furnishing, curtain, or acoustic panels. Keep your home theater room simple. Avoid the temptation to load up your home theater with curios and posters near the screen because they will only be a distraction.
