Designing & Building a Home Theater #8 - Tips For Where to Place Your A/V Equipment, and Furniture...

Home theaters require a full range of components that may include good quality speakers and subwoofers, a home theater receiver, a good flat-screen TV, cables, power protection, the right furniture and more. The following is the last addition the Designing & Building a Home Theater Series and has professional tips that will help you decide where and how to place your AV Equipment, Furniture, and more...

Where to Place Your Equipment

When you’re ready to set up a new home theater receiver, the first step is figuring out where to put it. It may seem like a simple point, but there are several factors to consider. After all, every component and speaker in your system will need to be connected to your receiver. Most home theater components have their front panel filled with flashing led displays, the colored light from these displays can distract if they are placed too close to your TV or Projection screen.

How to Position Your Furniture

As you might imagine, the placement of your television dictates where you should position your sofas and chairs — and the height of your television is an important factor in this equation. Obviously, placing your seating squarely in front of your television and back at least a few feet is the best solution, but not all rooms are conducive to such a simple setup. Modern televisions are much wider than they once were — meaning you can sit on either side of the television. However, if you have to turn your head significantly to see the screen, your seats should be repositioned.

Suggestions for a Media Closet

A media closet is an enclosed space where you can house your equipment rack. Store your DVD or Blu-Ray player, CD changer, game consoles, and much more. It can be a simple project to build a media closet, especially if you already have a small closet in the room where you wish to install one. In the case of a projection screen setup, it can serve as a projection booth. A small LCD preview monitor housed in your media closet may also prove useful in this case.
