What Equipment Is Required For A Home Surveillance System?

There are four essential components for a security camera system:

  1. Cameras
  2. Video recording system (NVR or DVR)
  3. Monitor
  4. Video management software (VMS)

How To Select The Right Camera?

CCTV cameras come in two options: Internet Protocol (IP) and analog. If you're looking for a system that is compatible with different digital applications, we recommend using the IP camera; however, if you have a legacy recording system, you can use an analog camera.

There are also different cameras that capture different types of footage, such as bullet cameras which have excellent zoom capabilities due to their shape, and dome cameras which have a wider field of vision than other cameras for 360-degree monitoring, so be sure to evaluate your needs and select the right camera for your home.

What Is The Best Video Recording System?

There are two video recording systems used for security purposes, digital video recorder (DVR) and network video recorder (NVR). While both systems record video footage, the main difference between them is how they process the video footage data. With the DVR systems, the data is stored as-is on storage devices, whereas, for NVR systems, the data is encoded and processed before it is stored. If you're opting for an IP camera, we recommend going with an NVR which is designed specifically to record video from digital cameras, while DVRs are better suited for working with analog cameras.

How Much Storage Does My Security Camera System Need?

For residential needs, it is recommended to have a hard drive that can store a minimum of 30 days' worth of footage which can be around eight terabytes for 1080p footage for up to 12 cameras, but to be on the safe side, we recommend opting for a hard drive that can store 90 days' worth of footage.
