How Can I Make My Home Safer? Tips To Keep Your Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky Home Safer For Your Family…
You just can't physically be in your home all day long and who would want to be. Knowing that most thefts take place on weekdays between 10-5 while you’re out loving your life or working, there is something you can do to give yourself some peace of mind while you’re away. A safety and security system IS your best bet but there are other things you can do to secure your home and family.
Install a Safety and Security System
Burglars tell police in interviews that alarm systems are a deterrent. In most cases the hardware for a security system isn’t unreasonably expensive but installing it yourself and programming it can be a real challenge for most homeowners. Installation and programming the system correctly will be key to securing your home and family. Some systems are hardwired and some are connected to home networking systems through a router. Your main control unit and arming station will need to be installed. Then all openings to the home will need sensors mounted, rooms will need motion detectors, and after you are finished this will all have to be programmed.
Install a Peephole
It is best not to open a door unless you know who’s on the other side and a peephole will solve this problem. Most entry doors don’t come with peepholes and a lot of peepholes on the market are too small, which prevents you from seeing clearly who is on the other side of your door. If people just step to the side they may be too hard to see on some peepholes. Make sure that your peephole allows you to see the peripheries.
Secure Your Mailbox
Sometimes the criminals don’t need to get in your house because your personal information is all they need to steal your identity. Checks, credit cards, financial and personal information are all sent to you in the mail, so don’t make it too easy to grab.
Install a Safe
Safes Are a good solution for sensitive papers, jewelry, and other valuables. Most people won’t need a huge, heavy safe to protect against thieves if the safe is secured properly to the floor or wall. Safes can guard against fire, be operated digitally, or even use biometrics (fingerprints, etc.) to gain access.
Install Pin Locks for Double-Hung Windows
A person with a pry bar can break most factory latches but some inexpensive pin locks can stop them in their tracks. You can drill a hole to lock the window and another hole a little bit above the first to use when you want a little ventilation.
Install an Additional Patio Door Lock
Patio doors are vulnerable. Yes, a heavy stick could bar the door closed but cosmetically it’s not the best option. Also, it’s a pain to take out the stick every time you want to use the door. You can install fasteners along the top or bottom of the patio door with a bolt that fits into a grommet to secure the door from opening.
Secure Your Doorjambs
You can remove the small ¾ inch screws, drill longer pilot holes, and install 3 inch screws to better anchor the strike plates to the door framing.
