In-Ground vs. Mounted: Comparing Outdoor Speaker Options

Triad outdoor speakers in a home garden.

Let’s Talk About Your Backyard Setup

Want to recreate the feeling of a restaurant patio or luxury resort in your backyard this summer? First, you’ll need some outdoor background music.

Outdoor speaker options from brands like Paradigm, KEF, and Triad are built to endure all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and heat. You can keep your weatherproof speakers outside year-round—even here in Dayton, OH, with our unpredictable weather.

When choosing permanently installed outdoor speakers, you generally have two options: in-ground or wall-mounted models. Which should you choose? Let’s compare.

Why Go for In-Ground Speakers?

If you have a vast backyard where friends and family frequently gather, in-ground burial speakers could be your best bet. These speakers connect across wide spaces via underground wires and deliver clear audio coverage while blending into your landscaping.

Another appealing benefit of buried speakers is their security. Since they’re connected to wires trenched underground, they’re much less accessible and less likely to be targets for theft.

Installing In-Ground Speakers

When Beacon Audio Video Systems comes to install your outdoor speakers, we’ll make sure to trench the wires that connect back to a centralized amplifier. This means you can easily manage your audio setup from anywhere, whether you're sipping a refreshing drink inside or lounging by the pool.

Plus, we can even integrate your outdoor system with indoor speakers, all controlled through one simple app or remote. How cool is that?

When to Choose Wall-Mounted Speakers

On the other hand, if your outdoor space is a bit smaller (think cozy decks or patios), then wall-mounted speakers may make more sense. These options are particularly convenient if you have paved surfaces like concrete or decking.

Installing Wall-Mounted Speakers

When mounting outdoor speakers, we typically drill small holes in exterior walls near the mounting location. Then we weave wires from the indoor amplifier through the wall and outside to the speaker location. Lastly, we apply outdoor-rated electrical conduits to conceal wires on exterior walls, which are painted to match the wall surface.

What About the Bass?

Want to kick it up a notch? You’ll want an outdoor subwoofer like the Garden Oasis Sub 8 from Paradigm, or the Garden Array sub from Triad, which can be installed above or below ground.

Underground subwoofers include hardware for below-ground installations in flowerbeds and yards, and are perfect for anyone seeking a discreet installation with bass emanating from below ground.

Above-ground subwoofers may sit on your patio or deck surface. Triad’s above-ground subwoofer includes a foot kit with four feet and bolts, allowing the sub to sit stably and perform as a down-firing unit.
