Locating the Theater in the Wrong Room

The location of your home theater is crucial. If your room is in a place in the house that suffers from traffic noise, your sound may be compromised if you don’t play your shows and movies at high volumes. Placing your home theater near your kids’ bedrooms could keep them up if the room in not well-treated acoustically. For the best picture quality, a minimal amount of ambient light helps, so the less windows the better. The shape of the room also matters; a square or rectangular room is ideal for the best acoustic performance from a surround sound system. Rooms with an open wall on the side or back can still be used, but they need to be designed correctly.

Picking the Wrong Screen Display Size

Your first instinct when selecting screen size is that bigger is better, but you should understand the nuances of viewing distances. You need enough viewing distance to be able to view the screen properly; the general rule is that you need a viewing range 1.6 times the diagonal measurement of the screen. The resolution also matters. At far enough distances, you may not be able to tell the difference between a 4K or 1080p display or projector; however, we do recommend the higher resolution of 4K and above as it provides more flexibility. Another consideration is the height of the screen related to the seats; you don’t want to be craning heads upward to view a large, high screen like in the first row of the cinema - the row nobody wants.

Placing The Seats Incorrectly

The placement of seats within your home theater is also essential. You want to place each seat so that when they are being used, every viewer has a good view of the screen. Be cognizant of high seats partially blocking a second row, or seats at angles to the screen that have a noticeably worse view. You should also consider the audio setup so that everyone can experience the surround sound properly; you want every seat to be in the “sweet spot.” Don’t buy your seating after you have completed your home theater because you will not be able to take this into account while designing the layout. Instead, begin looking at your seating options at the beginning of the process so you can find the types and combinations of seating that will be the best fit for your new theater.
